Future Possibilities in the World of Ophthalmology

If you are like most people, you ignore your eyes and all they can do for you until a problem such as allergies, deficient sight, or an infection strikes. Then you may panic and run to the nearest eye doctor for an exam, some eye drops, and perhaps even some new glasses. The future of ophthalmology may change all of that because artificial intelligence has invaded the future possibilities of the eye.

Micro Battery Powered Contact Lenses

For more than a decade, scientists have been working on developing micro-batteries. Around the world, labs have also been bringing contact lenses to life by introducing the various versions of the micro battery. Smart lenses are finally here, at least in the lab. With the ability to measure glucose levels, monitor vision, and quantify changes in intraocular pressure, the battery life may be short, and the wireless transmission may be limited, but it is amazing while it works.

Cyborg Headset Reads Eye Lenses

It is right out of a science fiction novel, but believe it or not, presbyopia can now be measured by a pair of cyborg-looking headset-focusing glasses. Connected to an AI algorithm that automatically reads and adjusts as the individual looks at objects on the screen while the eye-trackers monitor, read the shape of the eye, and then adjust the liquid inside each side of the glasses to allow for clearer focus. Kang Zhang is excited about the AI programs and the way they interface with the possibilities of the future for eyes.

Blind Doesn’t Have To Mean No Sight Anymore

Scientists in Switzerland have created a new electrode interface that can bypass the eye and transmit messages from the optic nerve directly to the brain. This exciting discovery means people without sight will be able to see with the help of artificial intelligence and nerve stimulation.

Ophthalmology is full of possibilities in the future. Who knows what can come next – perhaps it has already been written about in a science fiction novel.
